If salsa is the party, bachata is the slow conversation in the corner of it. It moves at roughly half the tempo, the basic step is three steps and a tap, and most complete beginners are dancing something recognisable inside their first session. That is why teachers so often recommend it as a first Latin dance.
Why bachata is kind to beginners
The bachata basic travels side to side on a slow, steady count, so there is time to feel each step rather than chase it. The music, a warm guitar-led Dominican style, marks the beat so clearly that finding it takes minutes, not weeks.
It is also a close, relaxed dance rather than a technical one. Progress comes from settling in, not from memorising figures, which suits adults who want to enjoy learning rather than study it.
Your first bachata session at Rozelle
A relaxed conversation about what you want, then the basic step, then the same step with music and with a partner. You do not need to bring one: come alone or as a couple, and your teacher partners the lesson either way. By the end you will have danced an actual bachata, slowly, and it will have felt easier than you expected.
Bachata plays well with others
Almost every bachata dancer ends up flirting with salsa, because Sydney's Latin nights run both back to back. A personalised program can carry the two side by side once your bachata basic is comfortable, which is exactly how our 30+ style repertoire is meant to be used.
