Ballroom has a reputation for being formal, which scares off exactly the people who would love it. Strip the sequins away and ballroom is simply walking with intention, to beautiful music, with another person. Adults who have never danced a step learn it every week in our Rozelle studio.
Which ballroom dance do beginners start with?
Usually the waltz or the foxtrot. Both move at a walking pace, both are built from steps your body already knows, and both teach the posture and partnering that every other ballroom dance borrows. From there, ballroom tango adds drama and Viennese waltz adds speed, when you are ready and not before.
That order is not a fixed syllabus. Your program is built around you, and if a particular dance is the reason you walked in, that is where we start.
No partner, no experience, no problem
Most of our ballroom students arrive solo, and many arrive certain they will be the worst in the room. There is no room to be worst in: lessons are private, your teacher is your partner, and the pace is set by you. The studio has been doing exactly this for adults since 2014.
A quiet warning about ballroom
It is habit-forming. The first time a waltz turn actually works, something clicks, and students who came for one dance often end up exploring the whole ballroom side of our 30+ styles. We consider this a feature.
