The cha cha is the cheeky one of the Latin family. Its name is the sound of its own footwork, the little triple step in the middle of the basic, and once your feet say it back to the music the dance more or less teaches itself forward from there.

What a beginner actually learns first

Two slow steps, then the cha-cha-cha triple. Said aloud, stepped slowly, then stepped to music. The syncopation that makes the dance look tricky from the outside is exactly what makes it stick: the rhythm is so distinctive that your feet remember it for you.

Cha cha music is everywhere once you start hearing it, from classic Latin bands to a surprising amount of pop, which makes it one of the most usable social dances we teach.

Personality over perfection

The cha cha is flirtatious and playful, and it works best when you stop trying to be precise and start having fun with it. That makes it a wonderful confidence dance: students who arrive self-conscious often find the cha cha is where they first catch themselves smiling in the mirror.

Natural next steps

The cha cha shares its DNA with rumba, which is the same walk slowed down, and with mambo, which speeds it up. Programs here are personalised rather than packaged, so where yours goes next depends on which of those pulls at you.
