Here is a secret wedding teachers keep: most first-dance songs are rumbas. Slow, four-four, heartfelt, from old soul to modern acoustic ballads. If your song is the slow one you fell in love to, odds are the rumba is the dance it has been waiting for.
Why the rumba suits a first dance so well
It is slow enough for two nervous people to stay together, intimate enough to feel like the moment deserves, and it photographs beautifully because rumba figures naturally open the couple toward the room. It is also the most achievable partner dance for couples who have never danced, which describes almost everyone who walks in.
What your rumba program looks like
The rumba basic and a couple of graceful figures, an entrance and an ending, all choreographed to your actual song and taught privately at the Rozelle studio. If your song turns out not to be a rumba after all, nothing is wasted: your teacher will map it in the free first session and steer the plan to the right dance, often the waltz.
Keep it after the wedding
The rumba is the dance you will use for the rest of your life: anniversaries, other people's weddings, any band's slow set. Couples who learned it for one night tend to report, slightly sheepishly, that they still dance it in the kitchen. We consider that the real deliverable.
