Nobody swing dances with a straight face. It is bouncy, big-band, grin-inducing music, and the beginner version is built on a six-count basic that forgives almost everything. If you want a first dance style that feels like play rather than study, this is the one.
The six-count basic, and why it works
East Coast swing, the version beginners start with, uses a rock step and two triple steps. That is the whole engine. Because the count is longer and the bounce is natural, small timing wobbles disappear into the dance instead of derailing it, which keeps first-timers relaxed enough to actually learn.
From that basic, turns and spins arrive quickly, and they are the fun kind: big, obvious, satisfying.
Swing's family tree lives here too
Love the vintage end of it? Lindy hop is swing's older, jazzier parent. Prefer something smoother and more modern? West Coast swing trades the bounce for glide and dances to current music. A personalised program can move you between them as your taste emerges.
Your first session
A chat about what you are hoping for, the basic step on your own, then with your teacher as your partner, then with music. Singles and couples are equally welcome, and no experience is assumed because almost none of our students arrive with any.
